GRANITE QUALITY INSPECTION

## How should engineering granite be inspected?

**Direct answer:** Fix the approved sample, latest drawings, product IDs and written tolerances before inspection. Then check six areas: document baseline, granite and batch, dimensions and geometry, finish and appearance, edges and custom details, and packing traceability. Every result should connect to a measured value, photograph or part record rather than only stating “accepted”.

**Confirm before inspection**

- Approved sample and acceptable colour range.

- Current drawing, cutting list and product IDs.

- Dimensions, tolerance, measuring position and tools.

- Sampling method, release conditions and exception handling.

- Packing, labels, photographs and arrival records.

## Six inspection areas and the records to retain

01 / INSPECTION

### Documents and acceptance baseline

- Confirm the latest drawing, cutting list and product IDs

- Record the approved sample, finish and acceptable colour range

- Define measuring tools, sampling and exception handling

**Suggested record:** Document revision, approval date, sample ID and responsible person

02 / INSPECTION

### Granite, batch and colour

- Match the granite name to batch or block records

- Compare colour and pattern under consistent light and dry conditions

- Use agreed sorting or dry lay for large visible areas

**Suggested record:** Batch marks, sorting result, dry-lay images and replenishment rule

03 / INSPECTION

### Dimensions and geometry

- Measure length, width and thickness

- Check both diagonals and squareness for rectangular pieces

- Verify holes, slots, chamfers, radii and joint relationships

**Suggested record:** Measured values, allowed tolerance, sample count and exception ID

04 / INSPECTION

### Finish and appearance

- Compare flamed, bush-hammered, polished or honed finish with the physical sample

- Check consistency, contamination, scratches and repair marks

- Separate natural characteristics from contract-defined rejection defects

**Suggested record:** Finish sample, light condition, appearance grade and photographs

05 / INSPECTION

### Edges and custom details

- Check chips, broken corners, cracks and continuous edge lines

- Verify face, orientation and installation number against drawings

- Trial-fit key interfaces for stairs, profiles or complex components

**Suggested record:** Part ID, fit result, rework or replacement status

06 / INSPECTION

### Packing and traceability

- Separate accepted products from material awaiting action

- Reconcile case, part, quantity, orientation and weight records

- Check separators, corner protection, supports and straps

**Suggested record:** Inspection status, packing list, packing photographs and dispatch link

## What should be checked by product type?

| **Product** | **Dimensions and geometry** | **Finish and appearance** | **Packing and installation link** |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Pavers and slabs | Length, width, thickness and diagonals | Finish consistency, colour and edges | Layout direction, quantity per pallet and protection |
| Kerbstones | Length, section dimensions and straightness | Worked faces, chamfers, ends and cracks | Separate sizes, protect ends and confirm lifting |
| Stairs and treads | Length, width, thickness, nosing and slots | Slip-resistant face, visible edges and joint colour | Level or position IDs, trial fit and edge protection |
| Cladding panels | Length, width, thickness, diagonals, holes and slots | Visible face, vein direction and dry-lay result | Elevation IDs, installation direction and upright support |
| Custom and carved pieces | Drawing control dimensions, interfaces and locating points | Profile, detail completeness and repair status | Part IDs, assembly relationship and custom supports |

## Minimum fields in a traceable inspection record

These eight information groups connect an observation to a specific component, drawing and package for reinspection, rework, replacement and arrival checks.

- **01** Order, project and case number

- **02** Granite, batch and part ID

- **03** Drawing or cutting-list revision

- **04** Measured length, width, thickness and diagonals

- **05** Finish, colour and appearance result

- **06** Hole, slot, edge or custom-interface result

- **07** Inspection date, person and exception status

- **08** Inspection photographs, dry lay and packing reference

## Limits of tolerances and test values

This page does not publish one universal tolerance because pavers, kerbstones, cladding, stairs and custom components differ in function, dimensions and installation. The applicable tolerance, sampling ratio and acceptance criteria must follow the project drawing, order, contract or agreed standard.

Compressive strength, flexural strength, water absorption and other physical properties must correspond to the selected granite, sampling and a valid test record. Values are not presented as verified facts without supporting documents. QUALITY INSPECTION FAQ

## Questions about engineering granite inspection

### What dimensional tolerance should be used for granite?

No single value fits every stone product. The tolerance should reflect product type, size, thickness, process, installation system and project standard, and it should be written into the drawing or order with a consistent measuring method.

### Can an approved sample represent the colour of the full order?

No. Natural granite varies between batches and across slabs. A sample sets the granite and approximate range; a large visible area also needs batch control, sorting rules, dry lay, replenishment and batch-change instructions.

### How many pieces should be sampled?

The contract, project standard or inspection plan should define the sample size and adjust it for order volume, product risk and process stability. First articles, critical custom pieces and products after a non-conformance generally need stronger verification.

### What should be ready for a third-party inspection?

Prepare current drawings, cutting lists, approved samples, product and case lists, measuring tools, completed-goods areas and exception records. Confirm inspection scope, sampling and release conditions in writing before the visit.

### What should a buyer do if damage is found on arrival?

Photograph the case, straps, labels and products continuously before and during unloading, retain packing and transport records, isolate affected pieces and record part IDs, quantities and positions before notifying the responsible parties under the contract.
